Australian W3C Office The Australian W3C Office, in conjunction with Monash University and DSTC Pty Ltd is pleased to present a free W3C presentation by Dr Ivan Herman, Head of Offices, W3C to be held on Thursday, 21st August 2003 at 2:00pm to 3:30pm. Venue: Monash City Conference Centre, Level 7, 30 Collins St, Melbourne.
Abstract: This talk will provide an overview of the W3C, and provide an introduction to Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG): describing what it is, how you can use it, and what it can do for you. SVG is an open W3C technology to represent 2D graphics on the Web. It has rich features, such as interaction and animations. It also integrates well with other Web technologies. This talk will look at how SVG integrates with other XML technologies, and how SVG is being used beyond the Web browser.
Bio: Dr Ivan Herman graduated as a mathematician at the Eötvös University of Budapest, Hungary, in 1979. After a brief scholarship at the Université Paris VI he joined the Hungarian research institute in computer science (SZTAKI) where he worked for 6 years (and turned into a computer scientist). He then spent three years at a software house in Münich, Germany, before joining the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Sciences (CWI) in Amsterdam in 1988. He received a PhD degree in Computer Science in 1990 at the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands. He currently holds a tenure position at CWI.
Although Ivan worked in quite different areas (distributed and dataflow programming, language design, system programming) he spend most of his research years in computer graphics and visualization. He also participated in various graphics related ISO standardization activities.
He was the co-chair of the 9th World Wide Web Conference, in Amsterdam, in May 2000, and is currently D-day co-chair of the WWW'2003 conference, to be held in May 2003, in Budapest. He was the W3C AC Rep for CWI, and head of the W3C Dutch Office until he joined the W3C team as a Head of Offices in January 2001.
